Pyramid of Success

The Pyramid of Success
John Wooden
25 blocks
Block 1: Industriousness
"There is no substitute for work. Worthwhile results come from hard work and careful planning."
Image result for what does industriousness mean
Industriousness mean actively engaged or occupied, busy chiefly stresses activity as opposed to idleness or leisure. "...Worthwhile results come from hard work and careful planning." is a great way to start if you want success because lazy people leave everything to the last minute. Most of the time the projects feel rushed and no good. For instance, teachers are grading bases on your effort. If you work hard then you'll get good grades. Having a careful plan for a project means it'll come out good and you won't be stressing because you don't know what to do. As for in a job your boss expects you to do good work. That is the only way to get a raise because a job doesn't want people who give them semigood work.

Block 2Enthusiasm

Image result for enthusiasm"It is the engine that powers all blocks of the Pyramid. It is why I chose Industriousness and Enthusiasm as the cornerstones of my Pyramid of Success. It is where everything begins."
Enthusiasm intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approval. If you don't have enthusiasm then you won't want to put as much effort as you would if you liked what you were doing. For instance if you like to do art but you're stuck in a business that you don't even like you'll never do good at your actual job. You'll hate going to work everyday it wouldn't be something you want it would be something you are forced to do. If you enjoy something then go for it, it is the start of success. Enthusiasm is the cornerstone because it is what will keep you motivated and want you to succeed.

Block 3Friendship

"Comes from mutual esteem, respect and devotion. Like marriage it must not be taken for granted but requires a joint effort."

Image result for friendshipFriendship helps with success because you have to surround yourself with people who will believe and motivate you. Some friendships in your life can bring you down. For example, having a friend who never supports your ideas and tells you they're no good isn't someone you want to have around. You should have people around you who support you.

Block 4: Loyalty
"To yourself and to all those depending upon you. Keep your self-respect."

Loyalty important to because it makes you dependable. As friendship was our last block, loyalty comes with friendship.  If you're aren't loyal to your friends they won't trust you.

Block 5: Cooperation

Image result for cooperation"With all levels of your co-workers. Listen if you want to be heard. Be interested in finding the best way, not in having your own way. "

If you're working in a business area which has to involve you cooperating with others than you have to try your best to get along with them. If you want their respect then respect them and hear them out. Two heads are better than one. Also try your best to cooperate

Block 6: Ambition (For noble goals)
Image result for Ambition
Ambition is a desire to do or achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. It is what many people have but sometimes ambition can lead you to do the wrong things. You have to be careful with ambition and make sure you do what's right.

Block 8: Alertness
"Be observing constantly. Stay open-minded. Be eager to learn and improve."

Being alert is important because it means you're always aware of your surrounding. For example, it makes you open minded about the things you see and how you proceed them. A close minded person doesn't know the things going on around them therefore they seem ignorant. On the other hand a person who is alert notices can stay on top of things.

Block 9: Initiative

"Cultivate the ability to make decisions and think alone. Do not be afraid of failure, but learn from it."

Initiative is the ability to assess and initiate things independently. Being afraid only means you won't even try to attempt to the things. You never know until you try and

Block 10: Intentness
"Set a realistic goal. Concentrate on its achievement by resisting all temptations and being determined and persistent."Image result for intentness

Setting realistic goals means its achievable. For instance, if you're failing all your classes you can't suddenly get all A's by the next week. On the other hand setting goals to go to tutoring and ask for makeups is very possible.

Block 11: Sincerity (keeps friends)

Image result for sincerity
Sincerity means the quality of being free from pretense, deceit, or hypocrisy. People don't like being friends with people who aren't sincere. If you're always lying and doing bad things people won't like to be around.  Imagine if you're friends with someone but they aren't being sincere to you, it would hurt your feelings . Don't do what you don't want to be done to you.

Block 12: Adaptability (to any situation)

Image result for adaptability

Adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions. Change is always happening it's just the way you handle it and are able to adapt. For instance, losing your job it can be sudden but you have to find a new job. The work environment may be different but you'll just have to get used to it and do your best. And in school you have to

Block 13: Condition
"Mental-Moral-Physical. Rest, exercise and diet must be considered. Moderation must be practiced. Dissipation must be eliminated."
Image result for condition

Being successful also means staying in the best condition.

Block 14: Skill

"A knowledge of and the ability to properly and quickly execute the fundamentals. Be prepared and cover every little detail."

Image result for skill

A skill is the ability to carry out a task with determined results often within a given amount of time, energy, or both. Skills can often be divided into domain-general and domain-specific skills.

Block 15:  Team Spirit

"A genuine consideration for others. An eagerness to sacrifice personal interests of glory for the welfare of all."

Image result for team spirit

Team spirit is working with a team and putting effort into the team. Not being the reason why your team is being dragged down.Members should be respecting of each other in order to achieve teamwork. Team spirit means to want to work with others and to be willing collaborators and to be very optimistic when working with others.

Block 16: Honesty (in thought and action)

"Honesty is the best policy." (Ben Franklin)
Image result for honesty

Honesty is one of the most searched for character trait. To be honest means to tell the truth at all time. This does not mean to be mean to everyone and say all the things that come to mind. If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.

Block 17: Resourcefulness (proper judgment)
“Make the most out of what you have.” (Anonymous)

"If you have a dream, if you have something you've always wanted to do, look within yourself because that is where resourcefulness resides; and go for it. (Jennifer Witterick)

Image result for resourcefulness
Resourcefulness the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. Also the most effective way to solve things. A example is

Block 18: Poise

"Just being yourself. Being at ease in any situation."

Bring the best out of you, and you'll see that it will bring you a long way. I can apply this new block into my daily life by believing in myself every time I take a test, quiz, or presentation.  People with poise can handle pressure without showing it.A poised person exhibits composure and self-assuredness, which comes in handy and You're balanced, grounded, and ready for action

Block 19: Confidence

"Thorough preparation breeds confidence" Gerald Bell in
"The Carolina Way"
Image result for confidence

Confidence the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust. You can't be confidence at something new automatically it takes practice to get the understanding of it and to be able to feel confident in what you're doing. If you are trying a new hobby for example tennis you won't feel confident doing it until you know your abilities and your weaknesses and strengths. Practicing grows your confidence and it makes you better.

Block 20: Reliability (creates respect)

Image result for reliability
Reliability the quality of being trustworthy or of performing consistently well.

Block 21: Fight (determined effort)Image result for Fight

Fight doesn't mean to physically fight it's just a expression. It means determined effort and all the effort you'll put into succeeding. For instance, if you start as a secretary in a job business you could make your way up from there, maybe even soon become the manager of that company. It just all depends on the effort you put into it.

Block 22: Competitive Greatness
" Be at your best when your best is needed. Enjoyment of a difficult challenge."

Competitive greatness means you'll be successful even when you lose or win. To have competitiveness doesn't just mean that you are determined in winning but it also means that don't overreact when you lose or when things don't go your way. For instance, if you lose a game you don't start cursing out the other team or try and fight them.

Block 23: Integrity (purity of intention)

Do the right thing instead of doing the wrong. To add on you make make you're decisions correct and don't ,make decisions personal, some decision may affect others. For example you are doing a group project you need to give your responsibility and effort on the project so your group will get a good score. But if you lack on your integrity it may affect your group. Be a CTR person.

Block 24: Faith (through prayer)
Believe and Achieve. Positive belief.
Image result for faith

Faith is very important because you need to trust and have confident in someone or something. For example,  you have a group project and you need to trust you team to get it done and help. Believing in something bigger can sometimes give you the confidence you need to do keep going.

Block 25: Patience (good things take time)

Patience the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. "Good things take time." is true because somethings just take longer to complete. For example, waiting for a video to load on youtube.

FINAL REFLECTION:
Write one final reflection, at least 25 sentences or 300 words, on the 25 blocks of the Pyramid of Success. Include this reflection at the end of your Pyramid of Success post. Include a picture or two.

A block that stood out to me was cooperation, cooperation is important because in a team you have to work together everybody has to cooperate, even by yourself you have to be cooperative which means to be able to do what someone tells you and for your work to be at a good level. Those are the 3 building block of success that stood out to me the most.

  1. Secondary Application Invitation: Experiences, attributes, and/or metrics from the AMCAS application are reviewed to determine suitability for a secondary application.
  2. Interview Invitation: After the Secondary Application (particularly the 3 formative activities) and Letters of Recommendation have been received, the applicant’s entire set of experiences, attributes, and metrics are considered to determine interview invitations.
  3. Interview: We use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) to delve more deeply into the applicant’s experiences and gain a deeper understanding of attributes relevant to a medical career. Our MMI is a blinded (closed-file) interview process.
  4. Acceptance: The Admissions Committee members review and make decisions based on the entire application packet including all experiences, attributes, and metrics to determine whether the applicant possesses the intellect, integrity, skills, and personal and emotional qualities necessary to become an effective physician.
At the UC Davis School of Medicine, we are committed to ensuring that every application is reviewed by at least one admissions committee faculty member before any final decision is rendered. Admission decisions are made without consideration of political or financial factors.
